Weight Problems in Dogs: Is Your Dog Fat?

July 29th, 2008

Did you know that obesity is one of the greatest health risks among dogs?
Obesity is caused by excessive eating and unhealthy binges just as it is in humans. Often, this situation is triggered by some environmental factors that may lead to more problems when not controlled .
Like humans, dogs develop certain diseases when they are overweight. These diseases, if not corrected, can lead to more serious complications including death. Here is a list of some of the repercussions of obesity in dogs:
1. Arthritis
Obesity in dogs tends to put extra weight on their bones. In turn, the joints and other parts of the dog’s bones develop arthritis.
Excess weight in dogs may also initiate the development of other muscle and joint problems like spinal disc disease, hip dysplasia, and cracks on the joint ligaments.
2. Diabetes
Like humans, dogs can get diabetes too. We all know for a fact that overweight cause diabetes in humans. This can also happen in dogs. The reason is that the more fat stored in the dog’s body, the greater its system will generate insulin in order to cope up with its growing mass. Hence, dogs have the tendency to resist too much insulin in the body. The end result is diabetes.
3. Skin problems
Obesity in dogs can cause some skin problems. This is because excess fat deposits are being stored in their skin; hence, their owners are having a hard time grooming them. When dogs lack proper grooming, there is a tendency to accumulate bacteria, dirt, or other elements that could cause harm to your dog’s skin. In the end, they develop rashes, skin ruptures, and infections.
4. Capacity to tolerate heat
With too much fat deposits accumulated in their skin, dogs are more inclined to problems concerning heat tolerance. This is because dogs find it hard to tolerate heat due to the build-up of fats in their skin. That is why most obese dogs are prone to heat stroke especially during summer time.
5. Respiratory problems and other heart diseases
Like humans, obese dogs also have the tendency to develop respiratory problems and heart diseases. This is because the chest cavity is already covered with thick fat deposits. Hence, whenever the dog breathes, the lungs are having a hard time expanding and so does the heart. The problem starts when the heart and the lungs can no longer produce the right amount of oxygen and circulate it within the dog’s body.
6. Gastrointestinal problems
Obesity in dogs causes some problems in their intestines and pancreas. This problem results in an inflamed pancreas which is very painful to the dog and can also cause death.
7. Liver problems
Fats are harder to strain and this can pose a problem to the dog’s liver. When the liver can no longer function well because of the fat deposits that accumulated in the area, liver problems may occur and may even cause the death of your dog.
These health problems are indeed life threatening. It depends upon the owner how to combat these problems in order to keep your dog healthy.
One of the greatest ways to solve weight problems is a strict exercise schedule. It is a must that owners create a healthy exercise schedule for their dogs. This can be done by taking them for a walk every afternoon or letting him run through a field.
The best thing about this program is that not only the dogs get the chance to exercise but their owners as well. So, it’s a double benefit.
Next is to create a healthy diet for your dogs. Diet meals are extremely important for dogs so that they can still obtain the necessary nutrients they need in order to stay healthy. This should include the right combination of fiber, meat, vegetables, vitamins, and minerals.
However, dog owners should always keep in mind that when their dogs are taking fiber, more water should be employed so as to prevent constipation.
Alternatively, dog owners should also remember that before incorporating all of these things for your dog, it’s best to consult the veterinarian first.
For healthier and happier dogs, give them the best love and care you can plus a great dietary regimen. As they say, a healthy dog is a happy dog.

How to Deal with Exotic Pet Behavior

July 28th, 2008

Many people are drawn by the desire to own exotic pets.
Some say it is to answer the need to be different and unique. Some have this obsession for anything exotic. Others are simply called into the wild.
No matter what the reasons may be, anybody who wants to own an exotic pet will definitely do everything to do so.
Basic Requirements in Owning an Exotic Pet
There are many things to consider in owning a pet. However, there are basic considerations before bringing home the exotic animal.
The household must have the physical structures needed to support the movement and ‘lifestyle’ of the pet. For example, there must be enough room for the big pet.
Financial considerations should also be factored in. Most exotic pets require unusual diet. The food alone can sometimes be burdensome.
There are also specific exotic pets that may be restricted or regulated by the local and federal laws like monkeys and tigers. Make sure no law is violated by bringing home the exotic creature.
Consent of everyone in the household must be acquired first. This is to avoid any problems or fights in the family and to maintain harmonious existence. Support or help in the household may also come in handy in caring for the pet.
Finally, one must also know how to properly deal with the behavior of the pet. In this regard, the following tips may be considered:
1. Research First
Before bringing home the exotic pet, be sure that the type will suit the needs and demands in the household. There could also be peculiar behaviors that may irritate the household.
Will it fit in the house? Should it stay indoor or outdoor? What are its toilet habits? Does it ever get noisy? Does it need a mate or can it live alone?
2. Consult the Veterinarian
Exotic pets behave differently than household pets. They may have needs that are beyond what the house can provide and only a veterinarian can answer.
However, not all veterinarians will accommodate a wild pet. Find a willing one that you can turn to when things get a bit complicated.
3. Get a Professional Trainer
There are behaviors in exotic pets that can be trained. Get a professional trainer that can teach this to them to make life with the pet easier and if possible, more fun.
4. Know the Limitations
Owners must know the limitations in the behavior of exotic pets. There are those that can be played with but be alert always of the limitations.
Conclusion
Know the way exotic animals behave. This will help in dealing with wild pets and enjoying them.

Bird Watching Magazines

July 28th, 2008

Some people are not able to go out as often as possible to do some bird watching. If this happens to an individual, some other ways are needed to keep the hobbyist involved in this recreational activity.
One way is to subscribe to a bird watching magazine. Many of these publications have pictures and informative articles about feeding and housing these winged creatures. There is a portion that answers the questions of fellow hobbyists by experts.
If a person wants to find out the different brands of binoculars ideal for bird watching, a special section is also there. These are rated and given various scores that can help the customer determine the best model to purchase to check out those winged creatures.
The best thing perhaps in getting a bird watching magazine is that it is helpful in showing people other species that may not be found in the guide. This is because the photographers are not only limited to those seen in one part of the United States but also in other countries as well.
Some magazines only publish bi-monthly. This means that the magazine will only release six issues in a given year. Others are able to publish a new issue monthly.
The price of these can vary from $15 to $50 each. A customer can get a discount by subscribing for the whole year.
There are more than 10 publications out there and not all can be found at the neighborhood newspaper stand. They have to be ordered from the company’s website or through electronic commerce stores that carry thm as one of their products.
There is a chance a person can find some old copies in a bookstore. No matter how late or how recent the issue is, it can still provide the hobbyist some knowledge about these winged creatures.
The only way for an individual to learn more about birds is to study the subject. It’s a fact that there are books to look at but magazines are much better because new articles and information are published more frequently.
The decision of which magazine to buy is up to the person because the articles in one may not be that interesting to another. It is only after reviewing it page by page that the reader can determine if it was worth reading or it is junk.

The Inside on Parelli Horse Training

July 28th, 2008

The Parelli program considered to be the first “Do it yourself” horse training by human in the world. The program is named from the founder named Pat Parelli. He developed the program while training horses for twenty five years. The reason why he developed this is because through giving deeper information with regards to training horses, people can release their potential when it comes to training horses.
The Parelli program is all about the development of the self. The first 3 phases are made specifically to teach the human. After that, the next level is all about the horse. This is the part wherein hands on is needed because it is more detailed. There are ten levels all in all in before you achieve the mastery of a human to horse relationship.
Level one is where trust and respect is built. It is made to help the owners or riders to create a positive impact to the horses. The first level will also teach you on how you can communicate with the horses and teach some things that the horse needs to understand while you are riding on his back.
In the second level, you will start to develop your independence and confidence with the horses, learning on how to read your horse’s behavior in advanced and utilizing psychology make horses do things that you want him to do.
Level three is about polishing the things you have taught your horses during the first two levels. This time, your communication with the horses is more subtle with accurate and more précised reactions from the horses. This level is about finesse and grace. You will also need to teach your horse the vertical flexion and know its benefits.
Level four is for those who want to attain higher level of performance, horsemanship, difficult horses, young horses and different horses. The levels five to ten is about unity. The fifth level is the start of having a background on how to attain unity.
The next four levels are made for achieving true unity. The true unity is what drives most of the dedicated horsemen. Having a physical, emotional and as well as mental unity with the horse is something rare and very special.
The last level is the mastery of true unity. This is a lifetime work because it can’t be achieved in just a few years of training. This is a continuous process that takes a lot of time before the horse masters the unity with nature and as well as the rider.

Before Training Your Arabian Horse

July 27th, 2008

The Arabian horse is one of the oldest breeds in the world. It is popular for its intelligence, stamina, and high spirit. It is easily recognizable because of the distinct shape of its head and the way it carries its high tail.
More than 4,500 years ago, Arabian horses originating from the Middle East have been distributed worldwide because of trade and war. They were bred to produce off springs that have better endurance, structure, and speed. Today, with it incredible characteristics, Arabian horses are found in every part of the world and are being trained for a variety of purposes.
One of the great traits of Arabian horses is its versatility. Up to date, the use of these fine bred horses has evolved from just a means of transportation and cargo bearing and loading to the field of horse racing and the disciplines of Dressage, Saddle Seat, Endurance riding, Reining, Show jumping and others. These horses are being trained to for these prestigious competitions and the lofty prizes involved but most of them are being trained for racing where the stakes are higher.
Arabian horses aren’t difficult to train. They are also considered as one of the most beautiful species to grace on land. But, to hone them to be in their best form isn’t an easy task and requires a series of trainings.
For the inexperienced horse owner, you should know some timely facts before beginning your horse’s training. Before engaging your horse in training, be sure that you have reflected and learned these facts.
• Your horse is your friend and not your slave. Be kind and gentle to your horse. Attend to their needs and know when your horse should take a break or rest.
• Don’t Pressure your horse. Your horse is different from other horses abut the same with its ability to learn. When training your horse, be patient. Any harsh word will only make your horse more nervous.
• Show terror and a child will learn how to terrorize. Same is true about horses. Cruelty will only yield equal hostility. So if you don’t want your horse to kick you or bite you, don’t abuse your horse. There is no sense in whipping your horse like there’s no sense in punishing a baby.
• Aggression only begets stubbornness, but gentleness commands
obedience. Instead of punishment, use positive reinforcement. Reward your horse for its rights actions. Giving your horse a reward each time it does the right thing you want it to will help it become eager to learn.
• Calm your horse with kind words. Appease your horse’s nervousness or excitability with kind words. Caress your horse. Whipping will only cause your horse to be cruel and dangerous. .

Knowing the Temperature Requirements of Exotic Pets

July 27th, 2008

So, you want to get an exotic pet, huh? Maybe you are tired of your regular dog and your good old cat. Maybe the bird joyfully chirping outside your window isn’t good enough for you anymore.
You want more challenge and adventure, as a pet owner. You want to take on the challenge of taking care of exotic animals as pets. Yes, exotic animals like skunks, spiders, and snakes.
But before you do just that, you have to know the proper condition of the type of exotic pet you intend to take care of. Mostly, exotic pets can’t live in the same condition such as yours. You first have to know its habitat temperature requirements.
For starters, try to research things about the pet and the particular species that you want. From where do these animals come from? Do they come from cold countries like Antarctica? Or hot ones like Kenya and South Africa?
The room temperature of the animals you intend to take care of should be maintained to match their natural habitat. If they are used to cold weather and you are in an equally cold country, like the U.S., then you should be fine. What about if they are used to a hot, humid place? That is going to be a problem, for sure.
If you intend to take care of an exotic pet that is used to weather not similar to yours, then the pets will definitely not survive long. The only thing that you can do is to set up a room and make its temperature akin to what the animal is used to.
Temperature is really important. So the next time you intend to take an oriental exotic animal to your relatively cold country, think twice. You might not be making a good decision. The pet you intend to take care of may not even last for a few days. It is just going to be a waste.
So the main thing here is, don’t get exotic pets originating from relatively hot countries, unless you really wanted to go into great heights simulating their natural habitat for them. If you are fine with that, then you can go ahead and take care of that pet. But if that is simply too much of a hassle for you, then don’t do it. It may not be worth it.

A List of Food for your precious Pet Fish

July 26th, 2008

One of the most satisfying hobbies on the planet (and probably one of the most relaxing, too!) is keeping an aquarium. The joy of looking at the crystal clear water with live fish and plants is truly inexplicable. And with this joy comes the tank cleaning and fish feeding. Although it is highly important to establish a good environment for your fish, it is also equally important, though, to know what to feed your fish. You may have the most beautiful aquarium on the block but you aren’t assured that your fish will last long if you aren’t careful with what you feed them.
The major rule in feeding your fish is to know what type or species your fish belongs to. Do thorough research. If you know what type of diet your pet fish should have, then it will be easier for your to scout for the food among pet shops or in the market. Remember the classification of animal diets (herbivore, carnivore and omnivore)? Fish also fall under these categories. There are fish that can only feed on algae flakes and who would shun, say, shrimp flakes. These are the herbivores (examples are Molly, Silver Dollar, Pacu or Tropheus) that also prefer to eat vegetable pellets or flakes and spinach. The carnivores (Archerfish, Banjo catfish, Bettas, Hachetfish, Frontosa, or Killifish) are the ones that prefer worms and small insects. Here’s a great hint for omnivore fishes ( Armored Catfish, Blood Parrot, Discus, Convict, Goldfish, Gourami, or Guppy): although they eat almost anything on a fish diet, they do prefer live foods.
Next to knowing what diet your fish should have, it is also important to make a balanced diet for your pet fish. Just like humans, fish also need a variety in their diet.
Protein is the most important part in a fish’s diet. Since this is so, it is important to remember this when looking for fish food in pet shops. Look for those foods that have fishmeal or shrimps on their labels. The lowest nutrient in your fish’s food should be fat. Just like humans, too much fat could damage their livers. Be sure to include some fibers in their diet, too. Just a little would be sufficient.
If you are a fishbowl keeper or one of those who are contented with just small tanks, then it is a must for you to feed your pet fish with just flakes or the freeze dried bloodworms that are available at most pet shops. The key here is to feed fish in small tanks with flaky fish foods. Also, be sure to give them just a pinch of flakes each time. If they are able to gobble them up immediately, then you can give another pinch, and so on. Food that isn’t consumed will go down to the bottom of the tank and will cause pollution. Also, remember not to overfeed your pet fish.
Flakes normally have a shelf life of just one month. If you feed your fish the flakes that are more than a month old, they could be more susceptible to illnesses because of the loss of nutritional content. Again, choose a variety of flakes so that your fish has a balanced diet.
For larger fish in larger tanks, the best food would be fish pellets or floating stick food. These pellets provide more food mass for larger fish. If you aren’t a fan of freeze-dried foods, then you can opt to have them fresh. Worms, insect eggs, and even small insects such as ants are a good feed to some types of fish.
Other than the usual flakes, pellets and floating stick foods, there are also other freeze-dried fish foods that can be bought at most pet shops. Most of these foods include tubifex, krill, or river shrimp.
Now that you know all these things, it is also important to know that fish recognize immediately who feeds them regularly. At the sight of food (even if you have just fed them), they would leap to get a mouthful. Again, remember not to overfeed them! You can ‘over love’ them but never, ever overfeed!

Cat Products: Automatic Litter Boxes

July 26th, 2008

Litter boxes are important to cats and are considered to be the next in importance to their food. Like people who love their toilets clean, cats don’t really love messy and smelly litter boxes. They want some place where they can move around and do their stuff. Litter boxes are available on the market and come in different size and shapes.
Be sure to buy something your cat won’t outgrow easily. Most cats, especially those below 5-6 months old can easily outgrow their litter boxes. Make sure to buy something that your cat will not out-grow or you’ll end up buying more litter boxes in a short time.
Another thing to keep in mind is that some cats don’t want to poop in the same box they pee in. Peeing is an animal’s way of marking her territory and she may not want to poop because it will erase her scent. So if your cat is like this, just buy another litter box and put it some place far away from the first one so she will not look at it as another box to pee in.
Automatic litter boxes are for people who don’t cherish the chore of cleaning litter boxes each day. These boxes are not cheap but a great idea when time is of importance.
These self-cleaning boxes use robotic trays where your cat’s waste is automatically raked into a sealable container shortly after your cat uses the litter box. These will not operate until your cat leaves the box since it uses motion detectors and a safety bar to stop the cleaning rake from harming your cat.
The best thing about these automatic litter boxes is that you’ll find that the odor is greatly reduced. Once the cat’s waste is in the container, it will automatically seal itself and cause the odor to be trapped inside. However, you must remember to empty this container once it is full or close to being full or its odor will become unbearable. Simply empty the storage container and reinsert it or purchase a replacement container.
One thing about automatic litter boxes is that they generally need electricity to run so you should place it close to a power outlet. There are some automatic litter boxes that can be operated with batteries so it is advisable to keep extra batteries on hand.
Another thing to remember is that the automatic litter box should be one-half to three-fourths full of litter. Use premium litter with it because some litter clumps will break up and cause the box not to be properly cleaned.
Most of the cat owners who have tried automatic litter boxes are happy with them and would prefer them to scooping up a mess.. Other cat owners though have a hard time adjusting to it. Automatic litter boxes, especially when the rake is in motion are not that quiet and the noise is something that needs to take time to get used to.
One good reason for using automatic litter boxes is health considerations. There are certain flu-like diseases that are caused by cat’s waste and can cause a person to have swollen glands, muscle pain, fever and headache. In some cases it can also cause brain damage and damage to your eyes and internal organs. For newly born children, this could cause mental retardation and/or hearing and sight loss. This is often caused by coming in contact with a cat’s waste and accidentally swallowing the virus in it. This can happen by touching your face after cleaning your cat’s litter box so wash your hands thoroughly after contact.
Cats will have certain problems when using non-automatic litter boxes also. Cats can have UTI (urinary tract infection) after using a dirty litter box. After using litter boxes, cats usually clean themselves up by licking their paws causing them to ingest the virus and cause them to get sick. Although not really fatal, this will cause discomfort for your pet and can only be cured by consulting a veterinarian.
